About Us - More on the Gait Harness System®

We want to make walking again, for those who need it, a reality

The most common goal that clients in rehabilitative programs report is to be able to walk again. Second Step is committed to helping people walk and stand again, through the results oriented, clinically proven Gait Harness System® (GHS) and Gait Harness System® II (GHSII). Many severely injured individuals who are using the GHS, and who were unable to walk in the 5, 10 and 20 plus years post their injuries, are now beginning to stand and walk again for the first time. The GHS helps individuals regain healthy functioning after challenges due to spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebellar degeneration, orthopedic, neurological, lower extremity amputation, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other ambulation, gait and balance rehabilitation issues.

The Gait Harness System also creates a functional environment for combined use with electric stimulation units, AFOs, KAFOS, orthotics, and prosthetics. The GHS is used world-wide in a broad spectrum of out-patient, in-patient, and home enriched environments. Clients can use the GHS at home to enhance therapy they may be receiving in the clinic. The Gait Harness System® provides a safe environment for individuals to perform a higher level of functional and movement skills, that they could not perform safely, or at all, through other means.

“The GHS allows for reinforcement of newly learned gait patterns, in a real world situation. Reinforcement of various quality of gait during land-based activities is s a must for the activity to become functional. "
William Thornton, MPT, Lead Physical Therapist, the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery®, Rehab Institute of Michigan, Detroit MI
“My client is an 18 year old, who experienced a TBI last year resulting from a shooting accident. He has used LiteGait and complained about discomfort in the groin area with that equipment.  He is very happy with the GHS, and decided to purchase one for home use."
K. Thornton, PT, Benefits Healthcare, Great Falls MT

“We are impressed at the logic, simplicity and engineering of the GHS. It certainly seems to be superior to the “Lite Gait” device which is apparently sold here in Hong Kong.”
David R., son-in-law of user, Hong Kong China

“I can tell you that the Second Step Gait Harness System has helped me tremendously. Since returning from China in 2003, I’ve tried body weight support treadmill training, with both a standard overhead lift and with the Lokomat. I’ve also tried the Litegait. I’ve combined the Lokomat with the GHS and the latest therapy from RIM. I’ve also used the Wave Machine with the GHS. What the GHS allowed me to do is walk at my own pace, with or without assistance. It’s allowed me to fully weight bear and with little to no discomfort, unlike every other harness I’ve tried.  And that’s not even mentioning the obvious benefits, like endurance and cardio.”
Bob Smith, C5 ASIA B user, Harrison Township MI

Second Step is "Helping People Walk Again" by keeping patients and caregivers safe, simultaneously facilitating functional therapy outcomes.

No problem is too big…if the right people, with the right treatment, and the right System, go at it the right way

….. renewed hope of recovery
“Your videos of brain injured folks, like my son, using the GHS brings tears to my eyes because it reminds us to never give up and to keep trying new things.”
Bonnie P., parent of user, Eugene OR

.....healthy opportunities for recovery
“Just this morning the Gait Harness System was bringing some amazement and tears to staff members as a student used it successfully.”
David Cacciatore, Physical Therapist, Lane School, Houston TX

…..keeping therapists & patients safe
“Patients cannot fall using the GHS as the harness is designed to support their full body weight if necessary.  No walker or cane can compare to the safety of this System.”
Nicole Prieto-Lewis, Director of the Gait and Balance Laboratory, Gainesville VA, Gainesville FL
